On June 19, 2024, the Village of Westchester proudly hosted its first annual Juneteenth Freedom Walk and second annual Flag-Raising Ceremony, marking a significant and moving commemoration of this historic day.
The event began with the Freedom Walk, which saw a spirited turnout. Participants gathered at the Broadview Missionary Baptist Church and marched about 1 mile across Roosevelt Road to Westchester Village Hall, symbolizing the ongoing journey towards equity for all.
Following the walk, nearly 300 attendees convened at the Westchester Village Hall for the Flag-Raising Ceremony, which featured inspiring speeches from local dignitaries such as Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, Cook County Commissioner Tara Stamps, Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar, Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey, and Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker. Their presence underscored the significance of Juneteenth and the collective commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in our communities.
Guests were also able to enjoy the Juneteenth Traveling Museum, a curated book display by the Westchester Public Library, and tasty complimentary refreshments provided by local businesses Shero Coffee, Krazy Grapes, and Sha-Poppin Gourmet Popcorn.
The participation and enthusiasm of everyone in attendance was a testament to the importance of unity in Westchester. What a special day!
